Environmental Information Disclosure-Environmental Costs Nexus: Evidence from Heavy Pollution Industry in China

Environmental disclosure has gained momentum in the past decades due to increasing pressure from different stakeholders, especially Chinese practice. In background, previous research focused on financial performance of environmental information disclosure, and little literature discussed nexus between costs. The paper made an initial attempt link aspects costs (i.e., quality, enterprise size, market orientation, ownership) based 234 listed enterprises heavy pollution industry Shanghai Shenzhen A-shares China 2013 2017. results showed following: (i) increased short term, but long-term effects were not significant; (ii) Enterprise size could weaken positive impact costs; (iii) marketization disrupted (iv) ownership (state-owned vs. private) had insignificant effect nexus. This study identify causes inertia perspective costs, so as provide practical guidance for activating initiative corporate disclosure.
